Milwaukie could start phasing out natural gas in new homes and city-owned buildings
Earlier this month, Milwaukie approved two resolutions that will start phasing out natural gas in new homes and city-owned buildings. The city joins others across the country that are taking steps towards climate action plans. Methane is the primary component of natural gas, it’s a greenhouse gas that’s up to 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Though it breaks down more quickly, methane traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide, making it a major contributor to climate change. Reducing its use in Milwaukie is part of the city’s climate action plan, which calls for net-zero emissions from buildings in 2035. If the city councilors pass the new resolutions, new homes and apartments will have induction ranges and heat pumps rather than gas stoves and furnaces.
