In an effort to promote recycling and reduce litter, the city of Rome has introduced a new initiative called “Recycle + Travel”. It works this way, you take plastic bottles to a metro station, insert them into a machine that crushes and sorts them, and you then gain credits towards transit fares. The machine offers 5 cents per bottle and 30 bottles earn a standard fare. So are the machines are only available in three stations, but if they prove successful, they’ll expand. The hope is that recycling habits will stick and encourage people to be more mindful where they toss their trash, even when they’re not taking transit.
