Great news in Hillsboro, residential customers with garbage, recycling and yard debris service will be soon getting a food compost pail. Starting next month, anyone who has yard debris service will be able to add food scraps to the yard debris roll cart. Nearly 30% of residential garbage produced in the area is organic material that can be composted. Composting food scraps prevents carbon emissions that occur when food breaks down in the landfill. Hillsboro joins Portland, Milwaukie, Forest Grove, Beaverton and Lake Oswego. Just about any food item can be composted in the yard debris bin, from meat and poultry, spoiled food, cheese and dairy products and plate scrapings. Call Metro’s Recycling Information Hotline with any curbside composting questions.
