France’s new law outlaws destruction of unsold products
For decades, manufacturers have sent to the landfill merchandise that’s gone unsold often because they don’t want them sold at a big discount. Toys, small appliances and clothing often end up in the landfill. Now France is taking action, they plan to outlaw the destruction of unsold products. Currently France landfills more than $900 million of unsold items but starting in 2023, manufacturers and retailers will have to donate, reuse or recycle the goods. It’s the first of its kind bill and it’s well past due. Last year, British luxury brand Burberry said it would stop burning tens of millions of dollars worth of unsold clothes and cosmetics, a practice they had done to preserve ‘brand value’.
