Chew on this. The average American wastes nearly a pound of food every day. That’s about a third of the average American’s daily calories. What’s interesting is that people who eat the healthiest throw away the most food. But if you think about it, it’s not surprising. Someone eating healthy is likely eating more fruits and vegetables, which spoil more quickly that processed foods. But all of that waste is bad for the environment. A study published last month found the biggest group of discarded food is produce at 39%. The next most discarded group was dairy, followed by meat and then grains. If you find yourself throwing out produce, make a couple of switches. Either try to shop for these items more often, buying a little at a time or use the produce in soups, smoothies or freeze them for later.
