As far as it goes at the KINK family home, the holiday season isn’t really officially here until we’ve done the annual benefit concert at The Roseland.

At the show with Feist

November 16, 2011, 11:12 pm
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - 11/16/11

"We're not spoon feeding you this concert." - Leslie Feist

The difference couldn't have been more stark, in almost every sense.  The first time I saw Feist was at a Folk Music Festival in, oh say, 2005.  She was playing on the main-stage during a beautiful and bright sunset over Jericho Beach in Vancouver, Canada.  The songs were fun, approachable.  Tonight was darker.  The stage was full of dark instruments packed with minor chords.  The concert was the perfect nightcap for a day full of rain, wind, and drear.

The Church of Ryan Adams

If concerts are church services for musicians, the message of the sermon on October 20th was: an engaging performance, not fancy effects, is all it takes to deliver a great concert.

The Head and the Heart

October 20, 2011, 5:30 am
Crystal Ballroom 10/19/11:

These guys are still a little green. New. Fresh. Still adjusting to being thrust into to the spotlight.  Ok, maybe this isn't an overnight success story, but it's certainly a lot quicker than expected (I suspect).  They seemed genuinely happy about the sold-out nature of the show, going out of their way to say thank you and point out home made signs.  Heck, I almost feel like they were blushing when they were introducing themselves.

"Hi.  We're the Head and the Heart.  We're from Seattle."
