The Community Builders Program is a free, neighborhood-based home repair delivery service, available to low-income senior and disabled homeowners throughout the City of Portland. It began in 1990 by making repairs on 3 homes in Portland.  Official Web site

• Today, the program has assisted over 1,600 homeowners with critical fire, life, health, and safety home repairs, enabling low-income seniors and persons with disabilities to be able to stay in their homes. We’ve completed over 7,000 repairs using over 2,900 volunteers who’ve collectively donated 22,000 hours of community service.

• Making repairs on 14 homes in north/northeast Portland – over 60 corporate and civic organizations are donating approximately $32,000 in cash and $54,000 in in-kind labor and materials donations.

• We’ll be working with over 300 volunteers throughout the day. They are leading teams, bringing carpentry, electrical, and plumbing skills to projects, painting, and completing yard clean-up projects.

• Typical repairs include plumbing (installation of grab bars), electrical (installing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide detectors), carpentry (building wheel chair ramps), and painting/yard clean ups.

• Type of homeowners we work with include senior and disabled Portlander’s living on very low incomes (earning, on average, $14,000 or less per year). Average age is 70, 80% are female, and over 60% of the homeowners live with some type of disability.

• Our program focuses on helping senior “age in place.” Our services improve the quality of each recipient's life, help avoid displacement due to gentrification and poverty, address a significant public health concern, all while bringing neighbors and area businesses together in the spirit of volunteerism. This volunteerism serves as a cornerstone of the program, enabling homeowners and their families to contribute directly to their own repairs.

• REACH receives support from the Portland’s Bureau of Housing and Community Development, Portland Development Commission Lents Urban Renewal Area, local businesses and trades professionals.

• All of the money raised to support today’s event came from local businesses. Our major underwriters include: Bank of America, Chase, Grainger, Lease Crutcher Lewis, Lifetime Windows, Oregon Tradeswomen, Trammel Crow Residential, LMC Construction, Miller Paint, Bank of the West, Great Kate Construction, IBEW Local 48, Portland YouthBuilders, and Wells Fargo

• Special thanks to our partner Milgard Windows, who in addition to donating windows for an entire house, is helping us underwrite our promotion today on KINK.

• Special thanks also to our many other partners who’re donating labor, materials, and skilled trades.
