OREGON BALLET THEATRE ARTISTS COLLABORATE WITH PORTLAND BANDS WEINLAND AND LAURA GIBSON AND DESIGNER EMLY KATZ

Portland Ore…Artists from Oregon Ballet Theatre will share a stage with Portland indie bands WEINLAND and Laura Gibson on July 24 and 25 as part of the collaborative project Uprising. Conceived by OBT soloist Candace Bouchard, Uprising is a movement among the dancers of OBT designed to bring the beauty of ballet to new audiences in non-traditional venues while fostering collaborations with outstanding local artists. The newest installment at The Aladdin Theatre will team Adam Shearer’s WEINLAND and Gibson’s self-titled band with seven Oregon Ballet Theatre dancers for a pair of ninety-minute performances costumed by local designer Emily Katz and featuring new choreography by Bouchard.

Uprising was created by OBT’s dancers as a means to provide them with performance opportunities during periods when they are not on contract with the company. It is produced solely with volunteer labor and donated goods.

The Oregon Ballet Theatre artists who will appear at the July shows are: Brennan Boyer, Andrea Cooper, Mia Leimkuhler, Julia Rowe, Grace Shibley, Brian Simcoe, and Javier Ubell. Musicians performing with Laura Gibson are Cory Gray (keyboards and trumpet) and Matthew Berger (drums, banjo, glockenspiel, melodica), and WEINLAND’s members include Adam Shearer, Aaron Pomerantz, Matthew Berger, Alia Farah and Paul Christensen.

Performances are at 7pm, July 24 and 25, at the Aladdin Theatre, located at 3017 SE Milwaukie Ave. The doors will open at 6pm.

Tickets are $18 in advance/ $20 day of show

Uprising (v. 2)

Music: WEINLAND (Demersville, 2006; La Lamentor, 2008; Break In The Sun, 2009) and Laura Gibson (If You Come To Greet Me, 2006; Six White Horses, 2006, Beasts of Seasons, 2009)
Composer: Adam Shearer and Laura Gibson
Choreography: Candace Bouchard
Costume Design: Emily Katz

Choreographer: Candace Bouchard
Born and raised in St Louis, Missouri, Candace Bouchard received her early training with St. Louis Ballet and continued her training at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Ballet Academy East in New York City. She danced with OBT as an apprentice in 2003 and joined the company in 2004. Bouchard was promoted to soloist in 2008. Bouchard saw her choreographic debut in the first Uprising with the band Horse Feathers in 2009.

Musicians: WEINLAND
Beginning as a bedroom project in 2001 under the name John Weinland, WEINLAND became a full-fledged band in 2005. Drawing from a myriad of experiences, including a number of years working in the mental health field, and employing an arsenal of musicians, Shearer’s music is lush and haunting in a signature style evocative of Neil Young, Nick Drake, and Elliott Smith.

Laura Gibson
Laura Gibson lives in Portland, Oregon, sings songs and plays a nylon-stringed guitar. She is 26 years-old...she grew up in a small isolated logging town in the south coast of Oregon, the daughter of a forest ranger and the town's kindergarten teacher. She was a state champion high-jumper, and went to college on a math scholarship and later studied counseling in graduate school...she couldn't tell you what band put out what particular album in what year, but she could probably describe where she was, how she felt and what you talked about, when she first met you, or what the trees looked like the last time her heart was broken.

Costume Design: Emily Katz
Born in Tucson, Emily Katz began training as a designer while on scholarship at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Since moving to Portland, her designs have been seen in many group and solo shows, selling her collections at such stores as Seaplane, Frances May, and Tumbleweed, and popping up often in both local and national press. This is her first time designing for dance.
