"...set me free." Those three words are the final three in the epilogue of Shakespeare's The Tempest. But it is merely the starting point to Miranda Beverly-Whittemore's second novel of the same name.
Miranda says music was a huge part of her process. Not just Shakespeare either. While writing this book she listened a lot to Dylan and Springsteen among others, trying to "tap into that feeling of driving along dusty roads in the high desert."
I had a chance to talk to Miranda about her book and her life (at 30!) being a "writer". She lives in Brooklyn . I love how she kept the special smells of the Oregon high desert in a bottle. Literally. You know, the sage, the stuff that has power to take you directly to place and time? It helped to keep "Set Me Free" to time and place as well. Listen to the podcast.
This is Miranda's website.
