Brace for an absolute miracle

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 - Les’ Fight Against Cancer, Chapter 12.

There are so many incredible life lessons you learn when you’re thrown into a situation you never could have anticipated.

For example, there really is a timeline for successful treatment of cancer. It’s just not mine and never in my wildest imagination did I ever think that I would be the one being taken care of by my caregiver wife, Rita.

As hard as it may seem, living with cancer, in some respects, is harder when watching someone who loves you deal with everything that can happen. So I thought it might be a good idea to have my caregiver and wife of 20 years, Rita, make this weeks contribution to my weekly blog and offer her perspective from the heart.  ~ Les

There have been many challenges in these past three – four weeks with some of them unbearable! There are so many qualities about Les that I have admired, respected, and aspired to. One of those has been his ever present positive attitude. He's always seeing the positive in a situation, clearly seeing both sides, looking for the good in it, and the good side of people, and more times than not changing my outlook. Giving me a better perspective and a more informed perspective because of his level of intelligence, his knowledge and research, and the capabilities of his heart and mind connection. I have learned so much from him.

I can be negative and critical, seeing the glass half empty, but not Les. For him the glass has always been half full – that is until recently. Sometimes it’s been very irritating for me but when I see how right he can be, the irritation turns inward at myself, seeing that I am the one with the need for an attitude adjustment. I know throughout all the years we have heard him on the radio you have clearly heard this as well. But for the first time in our 22 years together I have seen Les change in response to the challenges, the complications, the side affects, and the great toll this is taking on him and his body. So the emotional and physical strain are now combined and it is not a fight with cancer – it is a full out war!

Les has been absolutely exhausted, sleeping 12-14 hours a day with little energy and requiring rests and naps throughout the day. He has become depressed, easily agitated, and can’t stand that he cannot go a million miles an hour as he has done his whole life. In the 23 years my husband did the “Morning Show” on Kink he rarely missed a day of work due to illness. I came home from the classroom with all kinds of bugs from the children to share with him as I fought them off.

I keep reminding him of all his body has been through in these last ten months. From brain surgery, radiation brain surgery, to having a section of his lung removed with two walnut sized cancerous growths and nodes removed, to an unsuccessful eight weeks of chemo with a severe reaction combined. Combine this with the mega doses of steroids for a very long period of time and it is very clear that even Les and his amazing disposition, attitude and personality have been under quite a strain. It has taken its toll on him and now more than ever he needs people who care to rally even more with love, support and prayers. We are in need of a miracle! We know that those of you who are praying have made a difference and we are being carried by your prayers and we are moved and deeply grateful!

As we try to put one foot in front of the other we often read the words of a dear listener, Cindy Brandt. Cindy emailed weeks ago with a very special email containing these words and they have helped so much, “My prayers are with you! Remember: The light of God surrounds me. The love of God enfolds me. The power of God watches over me. Wherever I am: God is! A miracle he is going to perform, a miracle he is going to perform!” God bless you Cindy and all of you who are praying and supporting Les and me – You make a difference in many ways!

Amy Jolly a survivor of flight 1549, “Miracle on the Hudson”, said “I thought it meant brace for the last seconds on earth. I realize it meant so much more. It meant brace for something that would change my life. Brace for an absolute miracle.”
