Allergy Tips from The Portland Clinic

The Portland ClinicEnter to win The Portland Clinic Emergency Road Kit.

Here are some allergy tips from The Portland Clinic

1. Carpet, curtains, upholstery, mattresses, and pillows are reservoirs for dust mites. If possible, switching to hardwood floors, blinds, and vinyl or leather furniture can help with dust allergies. Dust covers for pillows and mattresses are beneficial. Placing pillows in the dryer every two weeks can also help.

2. If you allergic to pollen, running the air conditioner in the car or at home on days when pollen counts are high can help.

3. Allergies can be controlled very well with many medications including nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines, and leukotriene inhibitors.

4. Immunotherapy (allergy shots) can also help a great deal by decreasing the severity of your reaction to allergens.

5. Allergies can be exacerbated by asthma (and vice versa). Consult your physician if you feel this is present.

6. If you suffer from allergies stay inside between 5pm and 7pm during the summer, when pollen counts are usually the highest. Keep windows and doors closed, especially when sleeping.

7. Using an air purifier or air filter, at home, work and in the car will help you reduce your allergy symptoms.

8. Clean your home frequently. Damp dust and vacuum your home regularly to minimise the presence of pollen and dust.

9. Airing bedclothes in direct sunlight can help kill dust mites. Wash your bed linen in hot water weekly.

10. Be aware of the pollen count. The pollen count is usually broadcast along with the weather. Avoid areas of high pollen count such as long grass, freshly mowed lawns and trees.
