Artists Repertory Theatre has announced preliminary casting for its 2009/10 season, which begins with previews of Arthur Miller’s classic drama All My Sons in early September.  The season of 6 productions celebrates the company’s commitment to exploring the strengths, frailties, and diversity of the human condition primarily through regional premieres, commissioned works, and selected classics appropriate to contemporary issues.

From heart-wrenching tragedy to side-splitting comedy, from revered classics to a much-anticipated premiere, the 2009/10 season encompasses a wide range of the dramatic canon. Though differences in the plays abound, they share an exploration of relationships and family – both traditional and unconventional – that will resonate with today’s audiences.  By looking at the most influential relationships in our lives, we will have the opportunity to explore the intimate, complicated emotions that are essential to what it means to be human and alive in today’s society.

This American masterpiece is a powerful examination of the relationship between fathers and sons, the conflict between business ethics and the bottom line, the price of the American Dream, and the repercussions of profiting from war.  It is also an unforgettable family drama about loss, love, and loyalties that escalates to an electrifying climax.

All My Sons has been fully cast: Michael Fisher-Welsh (Joe Keller), Mindi Logan (Kate Keller), Thomas Stroppel (Chris Keller), Amy Newman (Ann Deever), Matthew Dieckman (George Deever), Mark Schwahn (Frank Lubey), Lauren Bair (Lydia Lubey), Ted Schulz (Jim Bayliss), Victoria Blake (Sue Bayliss) and Evan Shely (Bert).

Becky's New CarBecky’s New Car by Steven Dietz

Becky’s life isn’t exactly unhappy – but from her desk at a car dealership, she can’t help but wonder what else is out there. And then she finds out.  When a wealthy suitor presumes she is a widow - and she doesn’t correct him – she finds herself leading a double life until it quickly (and hilariously) accelerates out of her control. This clever and witty new comedy shows us an unexpected and inventive way to escape the midlife doldrums. This will be the second production of the play which premiered last year at ACT Theatre in Seattle.

The cast of Becky’s New Car includes Resident Acting Company Members Michael Mendelson, Todd Van Voris, and Amaya Villazan.

HolidazedHolidazed by Marc Acito & C.S. Whitcomb
November 17 – December 20, 2009 – Alder Stage

After many sold out shows in 2008, Holidazed returns to Artists Rep for the 2009 holiday season. This year, local writers Marc Acito and C.S. Whitcomb will be adding some fresh new sparks to the hilarious and heartwarming story.  The do-it-all super mom and wife and throws her Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas season on its ear when she takes in a feisty, pagan homeless teenager. 

The cast of Holidazed includes Susannah Mars, Ana Reiselman, Michael Mendelson, and Todd Van Voris reprising the roles they created in 2008.

Design For LivingDesign for Living by Noël Coward
January 5 – February 7, 2010 – Morrison Stage

From the master of wit and sophistication comes this delightful comedic masterpiece.  Three glamorous bohemians fall in and out of love with each other as they bounce from Paris to London to New York. But amid the sophistication and humor, lies deeper questions about unconventional relationships that don’t fit into society’s norms as well as the price of success.

The cast of Design for Living includes Resident Acting Company Members Todd Van Voris, Michael Mendelson, and Vana O’Brien.

OthelloOthello by William Shakespeare
April 13 – May 16, 2010 – Morrison Stage
Directed by Jon Kretzu
Shakespeare's most compelling and intimate tragedy, Othello’s themes of love, honor, and jealousy amid racial tension are as relevant today as when it was first written. The play’s backdrop is militaristic but is, at heart, a domestic tragedy about the formation and destruction of a marriage. The production will be set in the late 1940’s and will be inspired by film noir classics.

The cast of Othello includes Victor Morris as Othello and Resident Acting Company Members Amaya Villazan and Vana O’Brien.

Gracie And The AtomGracie and the Atom by McKinley
April 27 – May 30, 2010 – Alder Stage

A new musical from the popular local singer-songwriter and member of Dirty Martini.  When Gracie loses her father, she is sent off to Catholic school where Sister Lidwina preaches physics and Sister Francis dissects the Gospels.  As she searches for the mother she never knew, her classmates help her with the details of purgatory, Ouija boards, and superhero saints. But nothing in this new territory of protons and prayer can fully prepare Gracie for the new life ahead of her. Gracie and the Atom received its first workshop production by Artists Rep during the 2008 Fertile Ground New Works Festival and is now making its World Premiere.

Note: The season lineup, which was first announced in February, has been slightly altered.  The positions of All My Sons and Othello because of substantial school group interest in the Shakespearean drama. The change allows schools more planning time.  Also changed are the closing dates for some productions, making the length of production runs consistent throughout the season.

Founded in 1982, Artists Repertory Theatre is the oldest professional theater in Portland.  Artistic Director Allen Nause is currently celebrating 20 years leading the company.
