Laura Veirs' fourth annual "Two Beers Veirs" New Year's Celebration at the Laurelthirst Pub is a Portland All-Star musical showcase. Veirs' band includes Nate Query, John Moen, Christ Funk (all Decemberists), Jon Neufeld (Jackstraw) and Annalisa Tornfelt. Also appearing are Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine), Sallie Ford, Ritchie Young (Loch Lomond), Israel Nebeker (Blind Pilot) and Kevin and Anita Robinson (Blue Giant). 3. 30th Anniversary Celebration and New Year's Eve too, with Quarterflash at The Aladdin.

4. Undeck the Halls of Boughs and Holly. And if you're like me,  New Year's Day is the perfect time to do just that. And since Portland is the most sustainable city on the planet, we recycle it, right?

Residents of Portland may take advantage of curbside collection for recycling their Christmas tree. If you currently have curbside yard debris service from your garbage and recycling company, simply place your whole tree at your curb on yard debris pick-up day. Haulers will add a charge of $4 for trees under eight feet and $6 for taller trees to your bill. If you want to put your tree or wreath inside your yard debris roll cart, (since there is no fee for this regular pick-up) make sure the limbs don’t poke above the lip and that the cart weighs less than 100 pounds. For wreaths, remove all wire, wood or metal backings.

And here's a cool idea for your lights:  The Oregon Zoo is collecting old holiday strings of lights for recycling. Simply drop off your lights at the Zoo Store by Sunday, January 1st and in exchange, you’ll receive a coupon for a free piece of fudge from the Zoo Store.

5. The Game. A little something to round out this three day w-end.  Oregon  Ducks vs the Wisconsin Badgers.. unless you can beam down to Pasadena there are lots of options for being in the action. You could head to your nearest big screen down the street,  and you can listen to all the pregame, during and post, courtesy of our sister station The Game. Great way to welcome in a new year.
