ReuseConex – A Gathering of Fans of Reuse, Repair, Upcycling and DIY

October 1, 2012 – Portland, Oregon. Reuse, repair, upcycling and DIY takes center stage at ReuseConex, the international reuse conference and expo being held October 18-20, 2012 in Portland Oregon. ReuseConex conference brings together experts from the field of reuse to share best practices and replicable business models. The event ends with a free public Reuse Expo that includes a wide variety of reuse-based exhibitors, a ReFashion Show and ReArt Exhibit, and fun and educational upcycling workshops.

ReuseConex speakers, that include Beth Terry author of “Plastic Free,” Albe Zakes of TerraCycle, Lindsey Newkirk of Junk to Funk Trashion Collective and Kyle Wiens of iFixit.com, will discuss the importance of reuse, repair and upcycling in the context of community building, creative problem solving, and sustainability. Wiens said, “Often, a ten-minute repair is all that it takes to save something from a landfill. We want to unite users around repair, which is why I'm excited to share ideas with other reuse communities at ReuseConex.”

ReuseConex is presented by Reuse Alliance, a national nonprofit organization working to increase awareness of reuse by educating the public about the social, environmental and economic benefits of reuse. “Whether you’re a resale shop manager, an environmental educator, a green builder, an urban planner, an upcycling enthusiast or DIYer, this is the place to learn and share about all facets of reuse,” said MaryEllen Etienne, Executive Director of Reuse Alliance.

Local reuse enterprises supporting ReuseConex include SCRAP, Portland Metro Habitat for Humanity ReStores, Community Warehouse, Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette, Car2Go Portland, and GovDeals. ReuseConex fits perfectly with the state’s efforts to reduce waste and create green jobs, and will showcase Portland’s sustainability ethic and shine a spotlight on its reuse efforts. According to SCRAP’s Executive Director, Kelley Carmichael Casey, “Portland has the reuse chops to host a spectacular experience for guests attending the conference.”

Portland’s Mayor, Sam Adams, is delighted to see the event in his city. Adams said, “It’s only fitting that ReuseConex should take place here in Portland as we are a national leader in sustainable policies and practices.  Our City and my office are committed to supporting reuse, as evidenced by our support of Reuse PDX and the city’s Annual Reuse Week.”
