Rock Notes: Portlandia, Wilco, R.E.M.

We carried the news first last week when we sat across from the beautiful Annie Clark at lunch. She’s better known as St. Vincent and she’ll be on Portlandia during the fall premiere.
Here’s the backstory from Exclaim!

In early 2010, the Portlandia leads were in St. Vincent’s video for Actor‘s “Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood”. The end result (available for viewing below) was a hilarious and awkward rock concert in a feminist bookstore. Now, nearly two years later, the three are hooking up once more in the name of comedy when Clark appears on an upcoming episode of Portlandia.

Clark explained that she “heard from them in the past month or so, when I was out in L.A., and they said ‘Why don’t you come up to Portland and be on the show?’” Being friends with the pair, Clark immediatley agreed to a cameo, revealing she “played a waitress, and then I played a cop-uniform model. I got to be in a scene with Kyle MacLachlan. It was so cool, and he was such a gentleman.” God, Agent Cooper has all the luck.

Wilco on Letterman
In other cool stuff that happened, Wilco stopped by the Late Show with David Letterman last night to play "Born Alone," a jangly country rock number from their latest album, The Whole Love. The Chicago rockers play to their strengths on the tune, delivering a straightforward melody fleshed out with overdriven, garage-y electric organ, wailing lead guitar from Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy's comforting rasp.

R.E.M. will put out yet another greatest hits compilation. The band’s publicist confirms is accurate: the comp will be called Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011 and it'll be released on November 15 via Warner Bros.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds are coming to North America. Noel will play a number of cities this November in support of their debut album 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds', which is released through his own label Sour Mash Records / Mercury Records in North America on Tuesday 8th November.

The band will be premiering new songs off the debut album, as well as running through some of Noel's penned songs from his days in Oasis."
