Green Tip: Down the River Cleanup
The Clackamas River provides the Portland metropolitan area with fresh drinking water and is home to old-growth forests, bird species, steelhead, and one of the last remaining wild salmon runs in the lower Columbia basin! Did you know the Clackamas River is also “home” to inflatable dolphins, chains of flip-flops, lawn chairs and even microwaves? Come float and fill the boat with hundreds of volunteers on Sunday, September 9 at 9:00 a.m. as part of the 10th Annual Down the River Clean Up. The event begins at Barton County Park, where a flotilla of volunteers will raft, kayak, tube, canoe and SCUBA down a fifteen-mile stretch of the Clackamas, removing any trash it may encounter along the way to preserve and protect the beautiful and bountiful river. Pre-registration is required at www.WeLoveCleanRivers.org.
Since its inception, the Down the River Clean Up has involved 2,200 volunteers and removed twenty-three tons of trash from the Clackamas River!

The hard work does not go un-rewarded. The post-event celebration includes a free BBQ, live music by TapWater, Hopworks Urban Brewery libations, a silent auction with a great selection of outdoor gear and apparel, games, prizes and educational booths.
The event is co-coordinated by the Clackamas River Basin Council and We Love Clean Rivers, two local non-profits. Event sponsors include Clackamas River Water Providers, Lake Oswego Tigard Water Partnership, KEEN Footwear, Lithia Subaru of Oregon City, REI, Schwabe Law, eNRG Kayaking, Outward Bound, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, Clackamas County, Metro, Biokleen and more.
Attendees may participate in a silent auction featuring gear and apparel donated by Looptworks, Patagonia, Whitewater Designs, ClackaCraft, SMITH Optics, Columbia Sportswear and more. Volunteers will be able to demo shoes by KEEN Footwear and purchase them at a discounted price after the Clean Up. Money raised will be donated to We Love Clean Rivers. Prizes will be granted to winners of a friendly trash contest including weirdest piece of trash, cutest, most useful and more.
Everyone is encouraged to join the event. All non-motorized watercrafts are invited—floaters must be Class II+ whitewater experienced and have a personal floatation device. Don’t own or boat or feel comfortable navigating on your own? Event Raft seats are available for a small fee. On-land positions are available too, and found-object artists are wanted. All volunteers must pre-register online at www.WeLoveCleanRivers.org
The fun doesn’t stop after the Clean Up! The Ripple Effect, on October 12-14th in Oregon City at the Arch Bridge Re-Opening, will feature an art show and auction with pieces made directly from the trash collected at the Down River Clean Up.
