Acclaimed director John Hillcoat (THE ROAD, THE PROPOSITION) together with his friend and collaborator Nick Cave, delivers a thrillingly vivid slice of American outlaw history in this epic gangster tale, LAWLESS.

LAWLESS is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: three bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia.  Based on author Matt Bondurant’s fictionalized account of his family, “The Wettest County in the World,” the film gathers an ensemble of gifted, dynamic new-generation stars – Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska, Dane DeHaan – alongside two of the finest actors of their generations, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman.  A riveting, intense story of crime and corruption, loyalty and love, brutality and tenderness, LAWLESS is a rich addition to the American gangster canon.

There’s also a brilliant Lawless soundtrack, which features contributions from Mark Lanegan, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and 85 year-old bluegrass veteran Ralph Stanley, who turns in spellbinding covers of The Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat” and Captain Beefheart’s “Sure ‘Nuff’N Yes I Do”, with the rest of the content supplied by The Bootleggers, the band specially-convened by Cave and Warren Ellis for the project.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have been playing together for more than seventeen years, with The Bad Seeds, Grinderman and Dirty Three.  More recently they have been collaborating on soundtracks for films such as THE PROPOSITION (2005), THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD (2007), THE ENGLISH SURGEON (2007), THE GIRLS OF PHNOM PENH (2009), THE ROAD (2009), DIAS DE GRACIA (2011), and WEST OF MEMPHIS (2012); as well as Gísli Örn Gardarsson’s acrobatic theatrical productions of “Woyzeck” (2005), “Metamorphosis” (2006) and “Faust” (2009).
 
LAWLESS (2012) marks their third collaboration with John Hillcoat.
