Hottest w-end of the year is upon us. No complaints, right? Your cool retreat will be the coast, but if you're staying in the city, here come the options.1. SHOC Empowerment Run/Walk. There are many events like this one. In support of worthy causes and issues, we run and walk. This one is grassroots, and the issue is under-served. The Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Foundation has been building this event for some 8 years and it continues in the cozy community where Sherie was a teacher. Senator Ron Wyden will be on hand, as well. Plan on arriving by 7:30-ish. Team Latus Motors Harley-Davidson. The run/walk options take you along the peaceful Clackamas River and throughout Gladstone. 2. 14th Annual Pickathon. Set in the lush wooded meadows and forests of Pendarvis Farm, it's a festival like no other. Sustainable, organic, great vibe, 6 stages. Neko Case does her first set on Saturday. Don't miss that. But the three days of music will be one good thing after the other. The details are HERE.
3. Trek in the Park. It's back this weekend! All hands on deck for Journey to Babel. It features the first appearance of Sarek and Amanda, the parents of Spock. The Enterprise must transport dignitaries to a peace conference, with an assassin on the loose. A live re-enactment. CATHEDRAL PARK WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. The free show is at 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 24. More HERE.
4. The Muppets Screening. Last year's The Muppets was a fun and really clever film, right? We loved it. Now take it outdoors underneath the stars on a warm summer evening. It's screening for free at Sellwood Park Sunday at dusk. Yay! More HERE.
5. Invitational Plein Air Paint Out. This event brings together dozens of artists to create new works and exhibit them in the Museum’s front yard by turning the South Park Blocks into a lively outdoor studio. All day Saturday, artists will begin at first light and paint throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to watch and talk with the painters as they translate the landscape in front of their eyes to canvas.
On Sunday, the artists return to exhibit and sell selected works in the Museum's courtyard. Enjoy live music by jazz/swing trio Boy & Bean, handmade ice cream from Salt & Straw, and tasty sandwiches from Lovejoy Bakers.
