We like the sound of this. The Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival raised $902K to fight hunger in Oregon.
Love this news, just in from The Portland Business Journal.
"The 2012 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival raised a record $902,000 to feed hungry Oregonians, easily smashing the previous record of $748,000 set in 2011.
The 25th annual blues festival narrowly missed the Oregon Food Bank's goal of $945,000.
“We set a gigantic goal this year and came within inches of meeting it,” said Laura Golino de Lovato, director of development for the Oregon Food Bank, which owns the festival.
Organizers said the 120,000 attendees contributed an additional 104,000 pounds of food, beating the goal of 100,000 pounds.
The five-day festival ran July 4 to 9 at Portland’s Waterfront Park. It drew a long list of A-list performers. Curtis Salgado headlined the opening day lineup. The Steve Miller Band brought the gathering to a close Sunday.
Attendees are asked to contribute at least $10 and two cans of food at the gate.
The event is the main fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank, which serves a vast network of regional banks and food pantries across Oregon and Southwest Washington. The network serves one in 5 households across the state.
The 2011 festival attracted 120,000 people who contributed $748,000 and 110,454 pounds of food."
