By definition, a "beach read" is usually set at a beach. And, it's something you can't put it down. Done with "Island Apart". Welcome to Summer Reads 2012.

ISLAND APART

Enter to win a copy of ISLAND APART. Email us your name and address and we'll pick winners next week. Steven is a Reed College grad. Comes back to Portland once a year. In fact, don't miss him at Powell's Books at cedar Hills Crossing, Friday, June 22nd.

From the celebrated author of the bestselling cookbooks Planet Barbecue and How to Grill comes a surprising first novel about love, loss, redemption — and really good food. Claire Doheney agrees to house-sit in an oceanfront mansion on Chappaquiddick island, hoping to find solace, strength, and sufficient calm to finish her biography of the iconoclastic psychotherapist Wilhelm Reich. The last thing she expects to find is love. Told with a keen eye for Chappaquiddick's natural beauty, Island Apart (Forge) has it all: romance, travel, crime, and cooking scenes so vivid they'll make your taste buds ache. Think The Bridges of Madison County with better food.

STEVEN RAICHLEN

This book initially got my attention for two reasons. Its author is a guy I know from the world of chefs and foodie books, Steven Raichlen. And secondly? The story is set on Chappaquiddick Island on Martha's Vineyard. And it's loaded with images of food, and cooking with amazing ingredients.

I launched into "Island Apart" last w-end and didn't move off my couch that rainy Saturday until the last page had been finished.

Steven and I caught up on the phone earlier this week. Check out our convo, below.
