Ocean Frontiers: The Dawn of a New Era in Ocean Stewardship will premiere in Portland on its national tour at a special event with Oregon First Lady Cylvia Hayes on March 7, 7:00pm, at the Hollywood Theatre.

Green Fire Productions Executive Director and producer of Ocean Frontiers, Karen Meyer stated, “We are excited to present the solution-oriented, bipartisan stories of Ocean Frontiers to the American public. This documentary clearly conveys that people across the country want to work together to sustain their coastal and ocean economies that depend on a healthy ocean."

The Ocean Frontiers film premiere in Portland, Oregon, is co-hosted by Onward Oregon, Oregon League of Conservation Voters (OLCV), Bamboo Sushi, Surfrider Foundation, Sandy River Basin Watershed Council, Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, Oregon Wave Energy Trust (OWET), The Wetlands Conservancy, Green Fire Productions, Damascus Fiber Arts School, Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, Illahee, Milwaukie Understands Sustainable Transitions (MUST), We Love Clean Rivers, Willamette Riverkeeper and Audubon Society of Portland.

Ocean Frontiers illustrates how holistic and collaborative ocean governance will generate solutions that work for our economic interests as well as the environment. From Boston Harbor, the first port to redirect shipping lanes to protect endangered whales; to Iowa, where farmers are changing their agricultural practices to diminish their impact on the Gulf of Mexico’s dying sea; to both Port Orford, Oregon, and the Florida Keys, where fishermen are protecting their marine environment to increase the health of the very habitats that their businesses depend on, Ocean Frontiers is a tribute to and a tool for a new era in ocean stewardship.
First Lady Cylvia Hayes said, “Ocean Frontiers is an important film because it shows that we can successfully restore health to our oceans and coastal communities. The stories told in this film have much to offer in protecting and restoring our oceans and the diversity of values directly linked to them around the world.”

To learn first-hand about the Oregon story featured in Ocean Frontiers the Governor and First Lady recently climbed aboard the fishing vessel, Top Gun, with Captain Jeff Miles to tour the newly designated Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve, which is just off Port Orford in Oregon’s territorial sea.

Jeff Miles, a Port Orford fisherman with thirty-five years of experience said, “We feel very honored that the Governor and First Lady came to Port Orford to learn about what people are doing here. I read people very well, and it was clear that they have a genuine interest about the future of Oregon’s fishing industry.”

Lyle Keeler, a Port Orford fisherman of forty years, said, “I was most impressed that on a cold, stormy February day, the Governor and First Lady ventured out with us on a small fishing boat to learn about the science taking place in our new Redfish Rocks marine reserve.”

Governor Kitzhaber said, “We need to weave together good science, strong leadership, and a commitment to conserving resources while promoting economic prosperity for all. Ocean Frontiers shows how Oregon’s locally-grown efforts are examples of important regional and national work on a new era in ocean stewardship.”
