Upgrade the Compost Pail to "Classy" or "Cute"
Couple of months in to the metro “include the food” campaign. Ok. We’re there . It all goes into the kitchen compost pail. But point: those beige compost bins aren’t doing it. The city’s bin is good for under the sink. So maybe time for an upgrade? Let’s think on the counter with something cute, something classy. How about an ice bucket for the classy and a cookie jar for the cute factor. Go brand new or check out some of those Bakelite jars from the 40’s and go antique when you include your food. Reducing Clutter, From Mailbox to Inbox
Just when you’ve thought you’ve corralled that junk mail coming to your mailbox, and slowed the telemarketer dinnertime calls to a trickle, those credit card offers, phone books coupons still arrive. There’s a great free service that let’s you opt out. Reducing clutter in your house and doing mother nature a favor at the same time. But hey if you do want a few choice incoming catalogs You can opt in as well. Here's how.
Greener Than You Think
You may be greener than you think. If you're using shaving lotions and that old fashioned roll on or stick deodorant instead of the aerosol version, the good news is you are already reducing your carbon footprint. Even though they no longer have cfc’s which are the the bad guys in ozone depletion, aerosol cans may still contain hydrocarbons or compressed gasses, neither of which are good for our global climate’s health. And even though slight, every spurt from a spray bottle contributes to climate change. Look before you buy.
Your Locavore Status
Have you reached locavore statues yet? You might be a partimer and not realize it. The average fresh food travels 1500 miles to get to your kitchen. That’s a lot of fuel consumption. Even though farmers markets are a little pricier that the items we get in a grocery store, feel good knowing that the farmers you buy from keep about 85 cents for every dollar spent. How Green, Oregon?
Where does Oregon stand according to a brand new study? Not so bad. In one recent study, at the ten spot among 50 states. We shine the best at alternative energy. A few stats to consider. We use over 80 billion aluminum soda cans a year. Plastic bottles? We use nearly 3 million every hour and most get thrown out. It costs on average 50 bucks to take a ton of garbage to the landfill. 30 bucks to recycle it. So keep that in mind when you are ready to ditch your plastic or soda can. And remember to take those returnables back to a store for your refund!! Otherwise it WILL go to the landfill. More HERE.
