Maybe you’ve resolved to clear your clutter. For once and all. But here’s a sign of the future: Patagonia, the perennial leader of thought and action, has begun a campaign they call Common Threads. Valuing Nature
Learn something! That free lecture series at Portland State on Wednesday evenings is taking a look at sound solutions in our ecosystem and how we should be spending those precious dollars. Tomorrow evening, Willamette partnership’s Bobby Cochran wonders how mother nature might spend billions of dollars. The answer is very different than our current pattern of spending for conservation and environmental compliance especially in the crucial water quality in the Willamette and Klamath rivers. Grid-Aware Appliances
Now that we know household appliances (heating and cooling systems, refrigerators, electronics, hair dryers) account for 60 to 90 percent of the residential electricity consumption it’s good to know that the next new internet thing is moving away from communication and content surfing to integration of smart devices into the home.. think of it like this: appliances are becoming grid aware, and gaining ability to monitor and report their own usage and increase or decrease electricity usage by remote command. Also look for a cheap and handy little energy saving outlet for multiple devices like phone chargers, lights, kitchen appliances. More HERE
Green Up the Big Game
Superbowl Sunday is around the corner. On your party menu if you want to keep it green? How does tofu with peanuts roasted in chili oil, swiss chard and tortillas sound. Not so good? If you want to tackle food justice, plant based sustainable and responsibly grown food issue to another day, try this to green up the party. Reuse. Your bbq, your plates, check out the bamboo or one that is made entirely from fallen leaves and water. Seriously. Ver Terra makes them. Look for reusable straws. Locally Sourced Clothes
We’ve been thinking about eating, sourcing our food locally. How about sourcing clothes locally? Portland has a fierce and inventive community of designers offering fabulous and fun clothing but so much of it is Eco friendly. Some designers focus on fabric that is recycled. Like polyester which can be reused. Other things to think about? The carbon footprint of clothes, energy waste, transportation.
