S&T Music Club - Best of 2011

January 4, 2012, 10:20 am

My good buddy  invited me to join the Show and Tell Music Club.  It's like a book club... but without the reading.  Basically, at our meetings we all bring an album and pick 3 or 4 songs to share.  This is usually accompanied by a story explaining the album's significance to the presenter.  It's been a great way for me to discover new artists, but why keep them all to myself?  It occurred to me that perhaps I should share some of our results. ~Jason Miller

This Week's Theme - One of your favorite albums from 2011

Pick 1 - Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming

It's so rare that musicians find success so late in their careers, but that seems to be the case for Charles Bradley.  After years of toiling around in the underground soul scene, the 63 year old was signed to Daptone Records last year to make his first major record.  The results are incredible.  With all of the soul/funk revival going around, it's nice to hear the real McCoy.  One of the members of music club commented that she imagined him sweating when he performed.  And that's a good thing.    Another good thing, his onesie in this video.

Pick 2 - Laura Marling - A Creature I Don't Know

She has a voice that's beyond her years, which is not surprising since she only has 21 years under her belt.  Laura is an English folky singer/songwriter with a great sound.  She's already released 3 albums, and will be gracing Portland with her presence opening for Andrew Bird at his much anticipated show at the Schnitz on April 11th.  This will tide you over.

Pick 3 - Dan Mangan - Oh Fortune

The person who brought Oh Fortune said that he originally heard Dan Mangan on a comedy podcast. It sounds to me like there's a tad of Mumford and Sons' English/Scottish sound mixed in, but don't let that fool you.  He's very Canadian.  Electric folk at its finest.

My Pick - Josh Rouse and the Long Vacations - Josh Rouse and the Long Vacations

Not my favorite album of the year, but one that hasn't left my car in about 6 months.  I wrote a full review of the album when it came out, and you can read it HERE.
